Design Process Supercharged: AI in Industrial Design Education
Education Symposium
Panel Discussion
August 25, 2023
12:15 PM - 1:15 PM

The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in the design process is a rapidly growing trend. Many designers currently experiment in generating both text and image based AI aided Designs (AAD). At the same time, the NYC school district has announced a ban on using ChatGPT, an AI chatbot, citing concerns over a possibly negative impact on critical thinking development. The impact of AAD on design education is obvious, but many many questions remain unanswered.
We intend to cast light on the question “How should AAD be used in education?” By selecting a panel with varying backgrounds we will provide insights on the topic from both ends of the spectrum: From “What are the concerns with utilizing AI Tools in the design process?” to “Which opportunities are encouraged by open access?”
The discussion is structured to achieve these three main outcomes:
1. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the future implications of using AI tools in industrial design and develop an overall stance of the IDSA community on the topic.
2. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in critical thinking and discussion about the topic and its future implications.
3. Attendees will have the chance to connect and share their approach to include this topic in the curriculum.
